Random Quickhits:

-Is anyone else down on baseball this year? I don't think I watched a full playoff game this year. I think part of the problem can be attributed to the Rangers lack of success, but baseball just hasn't done anything for my sports world lately. Although the hot stove has been interesting to follow, the salaries these days are crazy. Gil Mesh (?) is getting $55 mil when he only has 55 career wins? What has J.D Drew ever done? Scott Boras is going to make a killing.

-If you thought your parents were annoying or if you wish Colt's dad would keep his mouth shut about the injury, it could be worse. Look at what the parents of three Arkansas freshman are saying. http://www.burntorangenation.com/story/2006/12/13/134854/41

-Todd Dodge is the new UNT coach. Keep an eye on him as he could be a future Longhorn coach.

I feel like I had a few more quickhits, but dinner is ready. Be ready to submit you Bowl picks next week.

It's A Wonderful Life

The past few weeks have been busy, but have been filled with time spent with family and friends. We witnessed Bo and Dru's wedding, saw Jed for the third time, saw Baby Noah, and Ryan came up for the weekend. I thank God everyday for our family and friends and treasure every moment we get to spend with them.

Quickhits:

-I'm sure you've heard by now that Sneed is transferring (most likely to TCU). Although you never want to lose a player with his ability, I get a sense that Longhorn fans are not that upset about him leaving. Since he is only a Freshman we haven't got too attached to him and it should also be pointed out that this is the second time that he has dodged a competition. He originally committed to Florida but withdrew after Tebow announced that he would attend UF. It will hurt our depth at QB, but Harris is a redshirt this year and hopefully we will sign top rated QB Jeff Brantly out of Florida.
-Paul Thompson will probably be my all-time favorite Sooner player. He went to OU because he wanted to play QB, but was willing to move to WR when Bobby decided to turn the offense over to Bomar. He didn't threaten to transfer, he didn't pack it in for the season, he worked hard to earn time at WR. He is also a perfect example of why QB depth is necessary, because the back-up is always a play away from starting (in this case he was a fake job away). I also love the fact that he didn't beat Texas but that a different story.
-If we can't get rid of the sideline reporters can we at least get rid of the coaches interview. I don't know if you saw, but the Rich Rodriguez interview was painful to watch. After they beat Rutgers, the reporter started asking about his interest in the Alabama job. It didn't make for good TV.
-Classic Mike Leech said that he was in favor of a 32 or 64 team playoff. That would be interesting. Play 10 regular season, all conference games and then play the first 2 or 3 rounds at the higher ranked team's home stadium. Will we ever see that day?
-The guys at work talked about boycotting the Notre Dame BCS game before we found out were they would play. Now that their playing LSU I have to tune in to see that train wreck. The Irish have been thrashed by the last 3 good teams they have played and if they thought USC has speed, wait until they see the Tigers defense. I want the Buyou Bengals to run up the score and pull a Woody Hayes and go for two after touchdowns (because he couldn't go for three). When the score is 68-0 I want Les to look over at Charlie and say " hey Charlie, mix in a salad."
-Courtney and I are going to pick all of the bowl games this year, so if you would like to play along start thinking about your picks. I'll post our picks for games being played that week and you can leave your picks in the comments section. I'll keep score and maybe the winner will take home a fabulous prize (probably not).

Texas A&M 12 - Texas 7

I finally watched the first half last Thursday and unfortunately the results didn't change. I think I have matured over the years because I didn't take the game too hard. I still had a horrible feeling in my stomach after the game, but I didn't dwell on the game for to long. My only immature act after the game was telling Fran to go eat a box of little debbies. It helped that there were many developments to focus on during the week (what Bowl would we go to?, Chizik going to Iowa State, Sneed transferring). Here are my long overdue thoughts:

-Paul McGuire is horrible and adds nothing to the broadcast. I'm not a huge fan of 3 man booths anyway and he just kills me. After it appeared that Quan trapped a catch, he says in his awful voice "that's a nice catch if he's a 3rd baseman". After a replay shows that a case could be made that he in fact made the catch, silence.
-Henry Melton where did you go? You might be the biggest bust of the season.
-A&M killed us on 3rd down conversions and they weren't 3rd-short. We can't win games by letting teams convert on 3rd&9,8,12,7. Anyone remember Arkansas' 3rd and 30 conversion in 2003.
-Once again the east and west running game is hurting the team. If Colt is not going to keep it on a few of the zone reads, why keep running that play.
-The pass interference on Sweed hurt, but the interception was the killer. That is the first time all year that I felt like Colt was forcing the pass. He threw into double coverage and off his back foot. He has been very successful by not forcing the ball, but I guess he was trying to get the TD back.
-How did they miss the aggie trying to take Sweed's helmet off. He yanked up on Limas' facemask twice as he was going to the ground. What was even worse was there was no mention of the play from the announcers. They were to busy talking about how Sweed wears the same number as Roy and they didn't say anything about the crowd booing the replay.
-Mark Dodge played a great game, he was all over the field.
-I just knew when we recovered that fumble we would wake up and win the game. I was thinking if we can catch a break we can take control and we tried. We scored, held A&M, then we were faced with a 3rd&5 and Greg Davis makes one of his famous play calls. He calls a swing pass to Selvin where Colt has to lob the ball over the jumping D end, the ball sails over Young's head. But even if he did catch the ball he would have had to break at least 2 tackles to pick up the first down. I know Colt wasn't showing great arm strength, but at least run a route that gives us a chance.
-I hope that Heard feels good about himself after lay out a defenseless McCoy. I would lay his fat butt out if I had a ten yard running start like he did and he was exposed like Colt. He was ejected from the game, but I wish he would have been taken to the locker room so he couldn't celebrate on field with his teammates.
-The A&M win puts the all-time series at 73-35-5 in favor of Texas. The aggie victory was their ninth at DKR and their first of the millennium.
